I recently added a comment to someone’s blog regarding Gay Marriage and the inevitable “slippery slope” argument. While such arguments aren’t always fallacies, it’s usually the way to bet, especially when coupled with the emotional tag line “Won’t someone think of the chillllldrrrrreeeeeeeennnnnnnnn!!!” I responded to each point and hit enter, not at all confident that my comment would be approved. As it turns out, I was quite correct in my trepidation; the person to whom I posted was not only incorrect in their assertions, they were stubbornly closed to any disagreement.
Fortunately, I have this article to put forth yet another reason gay marriage is a brilliant success. It works economically. We have the potential of seeing nearly $700M infused into the state’s flagging economy over the next three years, as well as adding over 2100 new jobs. Considering the way the economy’s going right now, that’s nothing to sneeze at.
While this certainly helps to put yet another nail in the coffin of discrimination against the GLBT community, I do wonder if even pragmatism and cold facts will persuade where reason has failed. Anti gay groups are now grasping at straws, oblivious to the fact that it’s simply no longer a tenable position.

Regardless of money that will be “infused” into the economy, this still does not make gay marriages the right choice.
Whether you choose to accept it or not, this nation was founded on Christian morals and principles.
The pledge of allegiance even includes “one nation under God” in it, with a beautiful explanation from President Eisenhower as to why:
“These words [“under God”] will remind Americans that despite our great physical strength we must remain humble. They will help us to keep constantly in our minds and hearts the spiritual and moral principles which alone give dignity to man, and upon which our way of life is founded.”
Despite the supposed benefits of allowing gay marriages, as President Eisenhower suggested, let us remain humble. This is not the way of God, and it ultimately will fail.

As I said, it’s one “more” reason gay marriage makes sense; not the only one. Whether this nation was built on Christian, Buddhist or Muslim principles matters not. What matters is that it is constitutionally unethical to exclude gay couples from marrying, just as it was constitutionally unethical to exclude couples of mixed race from marrying, and for the exact same reasons. The same groups that opposed mixed race marriages are the same groups that are now opposing gay marriage.
The law is divorced from religion in this country, whether you choose to accept that or not. While we have a “Christian citizenry,” we have a secular constitution and legal system, and marriage is a legal institution (at least in this country). Therefore, god has no dog in this fight.

It is indeed essential that we overcome Prop 8 this November. As Californians, (one of my favorite sayings is “As California goes, so goes the nation.”), we can do no less. The world is watching, and we MUST win this crucial fight for human rights.
